5 Vegetarian Foods That Are Effective in Preventing or Curing Gout

Gout is a type of arthritis that affects the joints of the body. It is caused by hyperuricemia, a condition when excessive uric acid buildup in the body.

Diseases such as thyroid and kidney problems stop the body’s ability to dissolve uric acid. Consumption of alcohol and foods that are high in purine increase the uric acid levels in the blood, which thus increases the risk of gout.

So below are a few vegetarian foods that everyone should include in their diet plan to prevent or cure gout.

1. Tofu

Foods like tofu are a great vegetarian source of protein and a great ingredient with many health benefits. It is low in purine and makes a great choice for people suffering from gout. Tofu contains all nine essential amino acids and provides the same benefits as soya beans.

Tofu can be frozen up to 5 months if kept in a packet. It can be kept fresh if stored in water in a refrigerated container.

2. Coffee

Consuming coffee lowers the gout risk. It is recommended to sip at least 4 cups of coffee a day to reduce the risk of gout by 40%. Coffee improves your energy levels and makes you smarter.

Additionally, consuming coffee helps in burning fat and improving physical performance.

3. Low-Fat Dairy Products

Low-fat dairy products like cottage cheese and yogurt are low in purines. Some low-fat dairy products are rich in calcium and protein and prevent your body from severe diseases.

Also, know that consuming these low-fat products may increase phosphorous a little, but if you are not taking other sources of protein, then it is fine.

4. All Nuts and Seeds

1/4th cup of unsalted nuts is a great alternative to meat. Add these nuts in a salad or eat raw for better results. The peanut butter sandwich is low purine and is beneficial for health.

Nuts are also rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamin E, copper, magnesium, and others. Besides nuts, these vegetarian foods are also rich in magnesium and improve immunity.

5. Fruits (Cherries, Strawberries, Blueberries)

All fruits should be eaten in prevent gout, but fruits like cherries and strawberries control acid levels and reduce inflammation. They are high in vitamin C and help to prevent gout attacks. Berries alleviate pain and contain numerous antioxidants that help in protecting the cells from damage by toxins. Additionally, berries show anti-arthritic nature and treat arthritis.

Consume berries in the form of juice or raw for better health benefits. You can also store berries to consume it later. There is no particular dosage of berries to prevent gout; however, a cup of berries (100-150gms) can be taken daily.

Gout can be controlled and prevented with a gout-friendly diet and medications. Also, it is recommended to eat foods that have low purine.
