It is no surprise to hear that there has been a rise in the number of people adopting vegetarianism. Also, after Novel Coronavirus has affected everyone globally, people are encouraged to go vegan and stop animal consumption.
The vegetarians across the country are urging Kiwis to cut meat from their diet and go veg in 2021. The New Zealand Society plant-based products are becoming popular in the country and are accepting the veg lifestyle.
According to a survey conducted between 500 people (the last year), it was found that over 500 people said they were planning to eat less meat in the coming year. People gave health and environmental reasons for cutting the meat consumption.
Another survey conducted in February showed a rise of 50% in Kiwis from last year. Also, it was found that Kiwis aged 18 or above mostly eat plant-based meals. The society spokesperson said,
"Around 15 percent of Kiwis are avoiding meat most or all of the time, and we believe that number is growing. It's easy to see why. Vegetarianism and veganism are better for the animals, better for the planet, and better for your health. It's a no-brainer."
According to a study, vegetarians save over 20 animals a year. The spokesperson said,
“Just like us, other animals have interests and deserve our respect. Animal agriculture is also the main cause of pollution to land and waterways. By making changes to what we eat, we can minimize the effect on the earth.”
The well-balanced vegetarian diet is healthier than meat diets. However, a vegan needs to have enough B12 and other required vitamins and minerals. The spokesperson said,
"It is especially important for vegans to ensure that they get enough B12, as this is not naturally-occurring in plant foods."
Another reason why people are going vegetarian is its cost. It is cheaper and an economically sustainable option.
Not everyone finds vegetarianism good for health. Some question the missing vitamins and nutrients and their effect on the body. Others are concerned if it is good for kids to go meat-free.
Children have higher nutrients than adults, and their growing muscles require protein. It is recommended to people going veg to consume different supplements of Vitamin B12 like beans, pulses, and nuts and seeds for better health results.
Vegetarian is not just a type of diet, but more of a lifestyle. It’s a healthier choice you make for the people, for the animals, and for a better planet
