People Chose More Plant-Based Food When They First Eat Plant-Based Food, A Study Finds

According to new reports, after the coronavirus pandemic has affected the world, people have become aware of plant-based food and are reducing the consumption of animal products. Recently a study revealed that the number of vegetarian choices increased the portion of plant-based food. The vegetarian diet is interesting because it is not only nutritious but also saves the planet.

A UN report reveals that even after using renewable energy resources, there’s a need to reduce the consumption of meat and to limit the worst effects of climate change. To do so, cafeterias, restaurants, and other food services should provide more and better plant-based food options.

Another study found that when people are offered plant-based recipes in a restaurant, they order them again, but this time with different options. It is seen that restaurants and cafes have increased the number of plant-based options. For instance, when the menu cards of multiple cafes in the UK were analyzed, it was found that over 90,000 cafeteria meal choices were changed.

A menu at the University’s Centre’s Main Dining Hall included Butternut Squash lasagne, breaded pork escalope, and roast chicken. The starters did not change, but the vegetarian options were added significantly. The increase in plant-based meals was noted, and consumers chose more plant-based recipes for their breakfast and lunch.

People Choose Vegetarian Meal Next Time and Not a Heavy Meat Diet

It was seen that people who opted for a plant-based meal didn’t pick a heavy meat diet for their next round. A press release reads -

“The results are from the first major study to look at whether tweaking food availability can “nudge” people towards better decision-making for both human health and preservation of the planet.”

The studies have highlighted the impact of meat production to be higher than plant-based alternatives. Switching to a plant-based diet is not a difficult task. Sometimes, you need more options to choose from. A Ph.D. candidate from the Cambridge Department of Zoology said,

“Shifting to a more plant-based diet is one of the most effective ways of reducing the environmental footprint of food. Replacing some meat or fish with more vegetarian options might seem obvious, but as far as we know no one had tested it before. Solutions that seem obvious don’t always work, but it would appear that this one does.”

Cambridge cafeterías have removed animal products from its menu and have replaced them with less carbon-intensive options. They reported around a 33% reduction in carbon emissions and a nearly 30% reduction in land use per unit of food.

Final Words

COVID-19 has changed the eating habits of people and has made them aware of the worst effects of animal products. Plant-based foods offer several life-transforming benefits and are encouraging people to go vegan.
