A Study Reveals That Vegans Have Better Endurance Capacity Than Meat-Eaters

The vegan diet is becoming popular day by day. While some are consuming a vegan diet to stop animal cruelty, others are finding it beneficial for their health. Indeed! A vegan diet offers several life-transforming health benefits such as it helps in losing weight, lowers blood sugar levels, and more.

A new study by Montreal researchers revealed that vegans have better endurance capacity than meat-eaters. It has debunked the misconception that vegans do not get enough vitamins and minerals that are required by the body. Other vegan diet myths that debunked are vegan diet offers less energy & people who consume plant-based food are physically weak.

Earlier, it was believed that meat is necessary to improve stamina and strength. But this study showed that a vegan diet is associated with a better endurance performance, which is independent of VO2 max levels. A study published in the Nature Research Journal in April is the first study that showed-

“A vegan diet may be associated with a better submaximal endurance performance, which is independent of VO2 max levels.”

The Research was Done on 56 Women

The research was done on 56 healthy and lean women. Half of the women were omnivores for two years, and others were vegans. Their diet routine was noted down for three days, and then they performed a series of strength and endurance tests.

“The test measured strength via arm press machine and leg press machine. Endurance was tested on a stationary bike by measuring the time how long the athletes cycled at 70% of their peak power before stopping as well as VO2 max levels.”

McGill University researcher, Guy Hajj Boutros, said,

“When you eat more carbohydrates, you’re actually increasing the amount of sugar in the muscle. When you increase this, you have better endurance capacity.”

He further added,

“You have to understand that you don’t need a lot of protein as everyone is saying. In general, people eat a lot more protein than they need.”

When you start to consume a vegan diet, then your body starts relying on carbohydrates found in fruits and nuts and a plant-based diet. The research concluded-

“Evidence has suggested that greater carbohydrate intake may be associated with better endurance performance, and this could be due to higher muscle glycogen storage."

The researchers added-

“Other potential mechanisms that may explain the better endurance performance in vegans could be due to favorable oxidative stress and inflammation profiles."

Final Words

Today, several restaurants and cafes have started making 100% vegan food to encourage vegan consumption. Also, celebs are encouraging people to turn into a vegan by sharing their vegan transformation stories.

After this study, it is believed that more people would turn vegan, and vegan food trends would make a strong impact globally in the coming years.
